Lean and Fast Picking Processes at CGR B-E GmbH

  • High space utilization with direct access to individual workstations

  • Complete solution, consisting of pallet racks and heavy-duty mobile racks

  • Completion planned for the first quarter of 2026

CGR International is a global supplier to the automotive and aerospace industries. Its core business is cold forming of metals and component manufacturing – from the production of springs to the manufacture of mechanical and mechatronic components. The international company has 24 production sites in eleven countries on four continents. CGR is expanding its capacity at its German site in Mettmann due to the growing demands on storage space and internal logistics processes. SSI SCHAEFER is implementing the storage solution, which consists both static pallet racking and mobile racking systems.

Complex mechatronic components, which can be found in almost all vehicles worldwide, are developed and manufactured in Mettmann. A new logistics hall is currently being built on an area of 620 square meters, with breaking ground taking place in June 2025. At the heart of the hall is the intralogistics solution from SSI SCHAEFER: a pallet racking system with 750 storage locations and a heavy-duty mobile racking system with a further 360 storage locations.

The aim is to achieve the most compact storage possible with direct access to each pallet. The transport routes have been planned to support the processes efficiently. In view of the global challenges facing the automotive industry, flexibility is a key factor. The solution is therefore designed for durability and expandability in line with requirements. Lean and fast picking processes are crucial to cushioning personnel bottlenecks and ensuring competitiveness – these are optimally supported by the new solution.

CGR B-E GmbH first approached SSI SCHAEFER in September 2024, and the order was confirmed in Q3 2025. “The collaboration with SSI SCHAEFER was very open and trusting from the very beginning,” emphasizes Edyta Köhler, Supply Chain Manager at CGR B-E GmbH. “Especially with the many detailed adjustments and technical questions, it was helpful to have a partner at our side who not only thinks along with us but also reacts quickly and in a solution-oriented manner.”

From the beginning, the intralogistics expert provided advice and support when it came to a wide variety of detailed adjustments and questions about technical feasibility. In addition, the new logistics hall had to be adapted to the structural conditions: “The new hall is being built between two existing buildings and had to be fitted exactly into the existing structure,” says Stefan Schmidt, plant manager at CGR B-E GmbH. “SSI SCHAEFER's experience in the planning and implementation of complex racking systems and in coordination with architects was clearly evident here.”

The completion is planned for the first quarter of 2026.
