New logistics center for maximum efficiency

SSI SCHAEFER built a 6,820 m² highly automated logistics center in Ecatepec de Morelos — the first of its kind in Mexico — to optimize storage capacity, picking rates, and shipping processes.

Currently, around 80% of La Costeña's production is centralized in Ecatepec de Morelos – the aim was to make this material flow more efficient. The unique feature of the project was its holistic plant design. A concept was developed that was perfectly tailored to the customer, taking into account the existing warehouse and linking it to the new logistics center. Integrated, centralized order picking plays an important role in the processes. The logistics center gives La Costeña the desired flexibility and scalability in terms of performance and storage space.

Automated channel storage system with 28,000 pallet locations

SSI SCHAEFER implemented a 6-aisle channel storage system consisting of two modules with a total of around 28,000 pallet storage spaces. Pallet conveying technology connects the two modules. Each module is operated by three SSI Exyz storage and retrieval machines (SRMs). The Exyz SRMs are each equipped with an SSI Orbiter LHD as a load handling device (LHD). The Orbiter moves the pallets on the lower levels of the racking system in the multi-depth channels. Three SSI Lift&Run systems operate in the upper area of the rack aisles per module. They also have SSI Orbiter LHD as LAM. The order pallets ready for shipment are buffered there.

Comprehensive conveying technology and smart picking solutions

To ensure optimal material flows, a total of 1.4 km of pallet conveyor technology, 13 vertical lifts to supply roller conveyors on two newly installed picking levels, and numerous peripheral devices, such as automated label applicators, foil wrappers, and information displays for the loading status, were installed. Order picking is carried out using order picking vehicles on CHEP pallets. The manual picking processes are supported by the Pack Pattern Generator. To increase stability and improve packing density, the Pack Pattern Generator creates packing patterns for the order pickers, according to which the pallets are optimally loaded.

Earthquake safety as an integral part of planning

In addition, SSI SCHAEFER’s extensive expertise in earthquake-resistant design was incorporated into the facility planning: detailed soil analyses were carried out in advance to ensure the stability and reliability of the system and its operation in the earthquake-prone area. The results of the analyses were incorporated into the planning of the racking system and thus contributed significantly to the optimization of the system.
