The initial situation
For more than a century, Moosmayr has been one of the leading wholesale companies in Austria and supplies more than 5,000 retailers with around 12,000 different items such as tobacco products, smoking utensils as well as office and convenience products.
In 2015, Susanne Moosmayr-Schlager and Michael Moosmayr took over as managing directors of the family business in the fourth generation. Their vision: Ensuring the company’s future in the long run – with more storage capacity, higher flexibility and increased efficiency. At the same time, it was necessary to counteract the increasing cost pressure and the shortage of skilled workers with comprehensive automation of the processes.
A decisive factor was that all construction measures had to be implemented on the existing company premises. Moosmayr was looking for an overall solution from a single source for planning and implementation. SSI SCHAEFER convinced them with their comprehensive expertise, sound experience in implementating complex storage structures as well as in-house hardware and software.
The solution
An ambitious new construction project paves Moosmayr‘s way into the future. In 2020, the construction of a modern logistics center with a high-performance high bay warehouse was started on a 10,000 m² area at the headquarters in Hofkirchen an der Trattnach, Austria: The warehouse is 75 m long, 15 m wide and 32 m high and can accommodate about 6,000 pallets. Additionally, the 10 m high SSI Cuby shuttle warehouse offers 16,000 bin storage locations. In order to make optimum use of the storage space, the aisles between the racks are so narrow that the installation of the storage-retrieval machines was actual precision work.
Since commissioning in 2021, 36 SSI Cuby shuttles have been running on 18 levels in two aisles with a speed of up to 2.5 m/s. When a customer order is triggered, the shuttles retrieve the required items within a few seconds and transfer the bins to the conveying system using a shuttle lift.
At the Advanced Pick Station, the pickers pick the item from the source bin and put it into the target bin. Pick by Light and light grid monitoring of the target points ensure clear operator guidance and guarantee the highest picking quality.
In 2023, the storage capacity of the existing building was expanded to meet the increasing requirements. A state-of-the-art SSI Miniload with two aisles and about 1,500 bin storage locations equipped with powerful SSI Miniload Cranes was installed. In addition, eight new packaging stations were set up, which optimally complement the existing 16 stations. This expansion enables Moosmayr to pack goods even more efficiently and flexibly and to process increasing order volumes more quickly.
All stock, storage, conveying, transport and picking processes are controlled and monitored by the WAMAS WCS (Warehouse Control System). It responds in real time to changing conditions and can, for example, seamlessly integrate customer orders that have been inserted into the processes at short notice.
