Future-Proof Automated Pallet High-Bay Warehouse for VOG

Making even better use of well-established structures? VOG expands its warehouse capacities with fully automated pallet high-bay warehouse by SSI SCHAEFER.

Warehouse Automation: Step by Step and Exactly as Needed

The Initial Situation

Quality, safety, diversity - the name VOG has stood for these values since 1916. The Austrian traditional company serves as a wholesaler for products from both the food and non-food sectors across Europe. A logistical feat made possible only through a complex infrastructure network with twelve subsidiaries and the in-house freight and packaging company VOGTRANS Speditions- und Verpackungsgesellschaft m.b.h.

Flexibility has always been one of the major strengths of VOG AG. Today the slogan "Trade means change" has become more important than ever. To remain successful in the face of personnel shortages, rising energy costs, and increasing performance pressure, new solutions are required. With SSI SCHAEFER, VOG found the perfect partner to face these challenges. The common goal: raising the efficiency of warehouse logistics to a new level through an automation concept, which is integrated into already existing structures.

The Solution

One thing was clear for VOG from the very beginning: an off-the-shelf logistics solution was completely out of the question. The new processes had to be smoothly interlinked with the existing structures at the company location in Linz and had to be adapted optimally to the needs of the wholesaler.

No problem for SSI SCHAEFER!

In 2023, after just two years of project duration, a customized future-proof concept was realized with the construction of a manual warehouse and an automated pallet high bay warehouse.

Apart from the 7,500 storage locations in the manual warehouse, the new, fully automated pallet high bay warehouse constitutes a real capacity upgrade: It provides space for a total of 11,000 pallets with double-deep storage and allows for a top performance even during peak times with four energy-efficient SSI Exyz storage-retrieval machines.  As requested, the automated warehouse was connected to a dispatch building and to an existing hall by means of a bidirectional conveying system, which ensures that goods can be flexibly moved into and out of the warehouse.

VOG's entry into automation turned out to be a success, not least due to the smart logistics software WAMAS. The material flow system WAMAS MFS controls and optimizes all processes in real-time alignment with WAMAS WCS, which assigns orders to available capacities in conveying systems and picking. This way, the system can handle up to 180 pallets per hour, far exceeding VOG's original requirements. It achieves an extremely high level of performance that the wholesaler can rely on even in the future, thanks to preventive maintenance and augmented support by SSI Schaefer.

Our experience with the automated system has been overwhelmingly positive. The system does not have to be run at full capacity around the clock, which saves energy. But thanks to the scalable buffering function it can be ramped up again in no time to significantly increase its technical performance. This allows us to not only handle seasonal peaks, but also accommodate future growth.

Integrating Performance-Optimized Warehouse Logistics into Existing Structures

Thanks to the new manual warehouse with 15 aisles and the double-deep automated pallet high bay warehouse, VOG AG could expand its capacities considerably. Furthermore, the SSI Exyz storage-retrieval machines ensure maximum efficiency: By utilizing a counterweight integrated into the mast, they save energy and costs already during the lifting movement. In combination with the intelligent WAMAS software, VOG benefits from fast and secure processes with the self-contained, high-density storage system - both today and in the future.
