agathon optimizes storage and picking processes with vertical lift modules

The long-established mould manufacturer agathon, based in the Ruhr region of Germany, aims to increase the efficiency of its tool warehouse. The company’s relocation to a new site has created space for this fresh start. SSI SCHAEFER is supplying several SSI LOGIMAT® vertical lift modules, which agathon is using to optimize and partially automate order picking. The new storage solution also enables ergonomic handling and maximizes the use of vertical space.

agathon GmbH is the leading manufacturer of chocolate moulds for large-scale industrial production worldwide. The family-owned company develops and manufactures customized chocolate moulds that give confectionery an unmistakable, high-quality design. From its headquarters in Bottrop, Germany, the company has been a system partner to nearly all major manufacturers and plant constructors in the chocolate, confectionery, and food industries for 75 years.

agathon's tool store holds the expertise of its past development work. Generally, the tool moulds remain the property of client companies. They must be stored securely and, if needed, made available to the injection moulding machines or the in-house workshop.

Relocation to a new facility

Over the years, agathon's headquarters reached its capacity limits. Since the end of 2022, the company has been relocating to a larger site in neighboring Essen. The new hall for the tool warehouse is already in place. In March 2024, SSI SCHAEFER received the order for the vertical lift module solution. Currently, SSI LOGIMAT storage lifts and a gantry crane are being installed. Storage within the vertical lift modules is managed using SSI SCHAEFER's WAMAS Lift & Store software, which is integrated with agathon’s ERP system. The new solution is expected to go live in October 2024.

Warehouse consolidation and ergonomic handling

The vertical design of SSI LOGIMAT allows for maximum utilization of the facility’s height. Agathon’s tool warehouse will feature a total of 8 storage lifts, each over 9 meters high. Warehouse staff will select the required tool mould, and the vertical lift module will deliver the relevant tray to the operator opening. With the additional LOGIDRIVE option, the tray is fully extended from the lift, enabling easy and safe transfer of the mould to the crane. To optimize this process, the cross beams of the crane runway are mounted directly onto the uprights of the storage lifts, offering ergonomic benefits and saving space.

Transparent inventory management

The integration of the SSI SCHAEFER solution also enhances the company’s software systems. Central to the data exchange is the WAMAS Lift & Store control solution, which manages article and order handling across the vertical lift modules, ensuring optimal use of available storage locations. This also provides full transparency in inventory management for warehouse staff.

WAMAS Lift & Store is connected to agathon’s ERP system, proALPHA, via a standard interface provided by SSI SCHAEFER. This connection allows warehouse data to be accessible company-wide. Additionally, the picking of tool moulds is fully automated and recorded in the ERP system.

Attractive design for high-quality shapes

agathon expects to benefit from warehouse consolidation, as well as from efficient, semi-automated, and ergonomic order picking using the vertical lift modules. A secondary but important factor was the aesthetic design of the systems. The sleek design of the storage lifts and trays is intended to enhance the visual appeal of the new facility. Both employees and agathon’s clients will benefit from this, especially considering the close development partnership between the toolmaker and product designers in the confectionery industry. Much of this collaboration occurs in the company’s Chocolate Design Center.

agathon’s Managing Director Volker Krämer is eagerly anticipating the upcoming launch, stating: “The concept of the vertical lift module solution from SSI SCHAEFER is impressive in terms of functionality, ergonomics, and design. We are now preparing together for the commissioning in October.”
