In a pioneering alliance between healthcare and logistics technology, DKSH Thailand has partnered SSI Schaefer, a global leader in innovative distribution center solutions, to modernize its Medical Device Distribution Center (MDDC) situated in Rama III, Bangkok, Thailand. DKSH, a renowned player in the medical device industry, has strategically undertaken this initiative in response to the continually evolving landscape of the healthcare sector.
The medical device industry presents unique challenges, primarily characterized by products of high value, temperature sensitivity, and delicate packaging. These products are subject to stringent regulations governing serial and batch numbers, as well as expiration dates. In this context, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) Thailand imposes rigorous requirements on all medical device distributors, mandating strict adherence to Good Manufacturing Practice (GMP) standards. The central focus within this regulatory framework is the imperative of traceability, demanding meticulous monitoring of each Stock Keeping Unit (SKU). This meticulous oversight ensures the swift identification of compromised or expired products at every critical juncture within the Distribution Center (DC).
In response to these challenges, SSI SCHAEFER introduced a comprehensive yet pocket-sized solution using it’s pioneered vertical lift module system – SSI LOGIMAT®. Combined with a putwall system, the total solution is nested within a compact 70m² footprint. The logistics operation from storage, picking, and packing for delivery are systematically implemented alongside an intelligent software that offers real-time visibility.
Achieving Inventory Visibility and Effective Handling with Technology
The cornerstone of the solution is the SSI LOGIMAT® Vertical Lift Module (VLM), standing at a height of 10 meters. The solution boasts an astonishing storage capacity for over 3,000 SKUs within its compact 30m² footprint. Operating on the efficient goods-to-person principle, this dynamic racking system optimizes storage and retrieval processes, achieving a remarkable average throughput rate of 300 pieces per hour, a more than 13% improvement from previous operations.
The deployment of a strategically positioned putwall system streamlines the order fulfillment process, minimizing travel distances between inventory storage and packing locations. Each put location within the putwall system represents an individual customer's order, with light indicators guiding pickers and ensuring accurate order consolidation.
Intelligent software that offers real-time visibility
Managing complex SKUs is streamlined with the SPS EasyConnect, an intuitive and user-friendly application that seamlessly integrates with existing systems, enabling real-time data synchronization. This intelligent software is S/4 HANA ready, adaptable to future automation needs, and can interface with additional systems as required.
